Review of Holiday Grill & Bar
Apparently the recipe for success is
pretty simple: Good food, low prices, attentive service and a comfortable
atmosphere can keep a restaurant in business for 27 years (and counting), as is
the case with this West Loop institution. I was, quite possibly, the only
newcomer, but I immediately felt at home. It may have been the Chicago
memorabilia all over the walls or the welcoming smiles that got me. Maybe I'm
just a sucker for a restaurant that serves breakfast all day.
All-American comfort food is what the
folks at Holiday Grill do best, and they've got all of the usual suspects:
pancakes, omelets, homemade soups, burgers and root beer floats, to name a few.
If you'd like a bloody mary with breakfast, you're in luck because there's a
full bar.
Full dinners (priced $6.25-$11.95)
come with soup or salad, bread, vegetables and your choice of potato, an
incredible value. Everyone loves the steak-cut onion rings ($2.50 for a
generous portion). I'll have to try those next time, as I was too stuffed from
my corned beef hash and eggs, which, at $5.75, comes with hashbrowns and toast.
Family owned and operated since
1979, Holiday Grill is a neighborhood hangout with an everybody-knows-everybody
feel. When they say "we hope to see you again soon," they mean it.

So, summer's "over." It
shouldn't change how you treat your weekends. Fall forward into pork chops for
breakfast, burgers for lunch and wine all day. Top it all off with some
next-wave rock artists, and you'll forget all about those dreamy days on the
beach. Well, maybe.

It takes a true meat-and-potatoes
lover to start the day with a grilled pork chop. Add eggs, toast and hashbrowns
into the mix and you may find yourself curled back up in bed, sleeping off a
food coma. But it's hard not to take advantage of the dish when it doesn't cost
you a dime over $7. If you want to keep it a little cheaper and a little less
meaty, go for the Three Deuces: pancakes, eggs and your choice of bacon or
sausage. Breakfast specials run Monday through Saturday starting at 6 a.m.
Additionally, Holiday Grill & Bar offers free wi-fi and a sidewalk cafe
during the warmer months.
